The Highway Code Updates

By Admin | Blog | 0 comment | 19 December, 2018 | 0

In November, the Department for Transport released some minor updates to the Highway Code. While there were a number of changes, some of the key ones are focused on the increasing impact of technology on driving, and how assistance systems can be used.

In particular:

  • Added information about using remote control parking and driver assistance systems, where the driver must have full control over these systems at all times.
  • It also makes reference to use of a hand-held remote control parking app or device, which is a rare thing at the moment, but will become more prevalent in years to come.
  • Updated information about using driver assistance systems (like motorway assist), in that these can be used whilst moving, however both hands should remain on the wheel where possible.

It’s interesting to note, that it doesn’t make specific reference to the use of mobile devices used in cradles whilst moving, which is the norm for so many drivers. Without proper understanding of how these can be used, drivers are putting themselves and others at undue risk, and possibly pick up penalty points.

The Highway Code has always evolved with changes to vehicle safety and technology. However, the speed of change is increasing, and this key document must ensure it keeps pace and doesn’t conflict with itself. Such as one rule – which states drivers must switch off their phone before moving, and in another they can use hands free kits for phones!

Bottom line is that as the driver, you are still responsible for the vehicle even if you use a driver assistance system. However, we shall see how that is interpreted by drivers, and updated within the Code as vehicles become more intelligent and autonomous!
