Q&A with Craig

    Q&A with Craig

Craig Combe has taken up the role of Managing Consultant to support increasing demand for growth across the UK and globally. Read more about Craig below.

Q: How long have you worked for RDHS?

A: I have been working with RDHS since October 2016 but since 2014 as an Associate

Q: Can you provide a brief career history?

A: I have over 15 years’ experience across the leisure and events industry having worked with and for Local Authority, Leisure Trusts, and Private Companies in various roles. I held initial roles within Local Authorities as Duty and Assistant Manager in my home county of Sussex, then diversified into Activities Management where I had responsibility for coaching, sports development, participation and programming within the local council and transitioned into performing the same role for a leisure trust. I moved back into operational management, managing two of the largest sites in Sussex where (amongst other roles) had responsibility for Health and Safety. This experience in managing large scale facilities, saw me then take a role on London 2012 where I worked as Venue Operations Manager across Velodrome, BMX track and Basketball Arena. Following this I remained in events and venue management working as a Facilities Manager across a wide range of events within racecourses. A move back into the leisure industry saw me continue in operational roles, firstly within a leisure trust then as Assistant Head of Department in the opening of Woburn Forest Center Parcs. Most recently I returned to the leisure trust market but continued to “keep my hand in” with major events, working in and managing Event Control Rooms on a wide range of sports events and concerts. This led me to join the RDHS team full time in October 2016

Q: What does your job entail?

A: It really varies, one day I can be working with a small local community sports centre, helping them maintain compliance, to leading a team of six consultants on the largest event to be held in 2017, the IPC World Para Athletics and IAAF World Athletics Championships.  My work can range from providing strategic plans for senior management teams to rolling my sleeves up and helping front line staff deliver their safety standards.  This could mean writing risk assessments, showing them how to set up equipment correctly or mentoring a new member of staff.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you face in your job?

A: The pressure of delivering world class standards on the world stage, under considerable time pressures and in the world’s spotlight is equally as challenging as supporting a small company to find the right level of safety management.

Q: What is the most rewarding element of your job?

A: Getting the above right!!  Also having the variety of work with RDHS who are contracted to deliver such a diverse range of services to a large number of clients can be very rewarding.

Q: What is one piece of advice would you share with clients?

A: Keep things simple, don’t overcomplicate safety.  You will achieve greater success if safety management is realistic, proportionate and sensible in its delivery.

Q: How would you describe your management style / how would you sum up your professional working philosophy or ethos?

A: I am very approachable and believe I get on with people.  I like to provide solutions and not problems and pay attention to detail, hopefully I am seen to deliver more than is expected.
