WORK EQUIPMENT MODULE
Any equipment used by Staff at work is generally covered by work equipment. This includes:
Hand tools
Ladders
Photocopiers
Lifting equipment
Fork lifts
Hazards:
Using the wrong equipment e.g., ladders instead of access towers for work at high level
Having inadequate controls or the wrong type of controls so that equipment cannot be turned off quickly/safely
Failure to keep guards, safety devices, controls etc., properly maintained so that equipment becomes unsafe
Failure to provide the right information, instruction and training for those using the equipment
Risks:
Death
Serious injury
Damage to premise
Damage to equipment
Cost
Staff Do’s:
Check the equipment is in a safe condition before using it
Inform managers if they believe the equipment is unsafe and not working properly
Stop using the equipment until the matter has been resolved
Ensure the equipment is safely quarantined or inoperable
Staff Dont's:
Use equipment unless they are trained to do so
Try to clean a moving machine
Use equipment which has an out of order sign attached or is in quarantine
Wear jewellery or loose clothing (with the exception of wedding rings)
Have long hair which could get caught (should be tied up or contained in suitable headgear)
Fool around or deliberately misuse the equipment
Use equipment in Public areas unless safe to do so
